Mission Experiences within the East Region of the Diocese of North Carolina

Calvary Church, Tarboro spent a week at Glory Ridge with Saint James, Wilmington.  Barbara Lee

Saint Luke's, Durham, sent a group of 12 youth and four adults to Mission on the Bay in Bay St. Louis, MS, June 13-20.  We were hosted our first night (Saturday) by St. John's Episcopal Church in Ocean Springs, MS.  We attended church there and spent a day touring New Orleans (including the lower 9th Ward) on Sunday before heading to Mission on the Bay.  During the week, we helped in the Hurricane Katrina recovery effort by clearing debris from demolished houses and moving equipment and supplies for another relief agency, Camp Coast Care.  We also worked to secure fencing in a homeowner's yard so that she could move back home with her two canine companions.  Another highlight of our trip was our group's worship together.  Several of us were inspired to get up early for morning prayer on the beach each day.  Each evening we gathered for prayers, singing, and reflections on the day.  On the way home, one of our vans broke down in the middle of rural Alabama.  We were helped by several "angels" who got us back on the road safe and sound...thanks be to God!  Our youth kept a blog of the entire trip on our church website:  (Click on "blogs").  The Rev. Joseph "Joe" H. Hensley, Jr.

Prince of Peace, Apex took a group of 40 volunteers on a mission trip to Lee County, VA. The trip was organized through Appalachian Service Project  , which Prince of Peace has been working with for a number of years. Read more about their trip.

Church of the Holy Family, Chapel Hill "Two youth joined with 6 other parishioners to visit their partner parish and school in Molas, Haiti. High school students Matthew Graham and Thomas Reardon helped with a two-day medical clinic, where over 300 children and adults were seen. Holy Family has enjoyed a long partnership with the village of Molas, which is located on a mountain top in northern Haiti. The remote village can only be reached on foot and is a 5-hour hike uphill. As always, the brothers and sisters in Molas were full of incredible hospitality for the mission team. One highlight of the trip was the worship service where many children were baptized." Meredith Leight

Saint Paul’s, Cary completed its 12th mission trip with Appalachian Service Project (ASP) this summer. For the third year in a row, we had five teams of 5 youth and 2 adults working at separate house sites. Our tasks varied from working on roofs to getting down and dirty insulating under houses. It was a week of stewardship, relationships, and hard work; and we love it.  Zach Swann

Christ Church, Raleigh "I used The Office of Disaster Response, New Orleans  two years ago for a youth trip, and they were great…Connie Uddo, was who we worked with and she is fantastic." Liz Stroff

Christ Church, Raleigh "I have used Mission on the Bay – Mississippi  three years ago. [Province IV Youth has worked with MOB the last three years.] They coordinate strictly with youth groups.  You can also use Camp Coast Care, but they have an age requirement of 16 years so this group will take any middle or high school students."
